Radical nun says answering her Christian calling landed her in prison | Al Jazeera America

Sister Megan Rice is an anti-nuclear activist and Roman Catholic nun of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. On July 28, 2012, Rice, at 82 years old, and two fellow activists (Michael R. Walli, 63 years old, and Gregory I. Boertje-Obed, 57 years old) broke into the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, spray-painted antiwar slogans, and splashed blood on the outside of the heavily guarded Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility. The three are members of the organization "Transform Now Plowshares", a part of the Plowshares Movement, which references the Book of Isaiah's call to "hammer their swords into plowshares", i.e., convert weapons into peaceful tools. Justifying their infiltration of the Oak Ridge facility, the trio cited both Biblical verses calling for world peace and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as justifications. The New York Times reported that nuclear experts called this action "the biggest security breach in the history of the nation's atomic complex."Rice, Walli, and Boertje-Obed were charged with misdemeanor trespass and "destruction and depredation" of government property (a felony) and may face up to a $100,000 fine and up to a year in prison. However they were charged with damaging a defense facility under the sabotage act, a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, and charged with causing more than $1,000 damage to government property, up to 10 years in prison. On May 9, 2013, the three were convicted. In her testimony Sister Megan said "I regret I didn't do this 70 years ago." (Source: Wikipedia)

A Nine-Year-Old Speaks to Institutional Racism

"This video was filmed by the one-man “Video Catalyst Project,” which is dedicated to bringing unheard voices to the fore. Asean Johnson, age 9, was recorded on the occasion of Chicago’s school closings, and the video really speaks for itself. The video has been watched more than 300,000 times, and we are proud to call attention to it on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Asean, by the way, was the youngest speaker at the March of Washington held this past weekend." —Ruth McCambridge

Saving America's bees from chemical Armageddon

Quietly, across the USA, millions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and food. A new bill this week could ban one group of deadly pesticides and save bees from annihilation, but only if Congress feels the sting of public opinion. America’s bees are facing a chemical Armageddon -- just last week, 50,000 died in a single car park in Oregon after being exposed to pesticides, and last winter over 50% of all California’s bees died. Leading scientists blame one group of pesticides called neonicotinoids. The evidence is so compelling that the entire European Union has begun banning them, and the Save America's Pollinators Act could impose a ban on these deadly poisons in the US. Now it's up to us to get our politicians to save America's bees. Big Agriculture and powerful chemical companies like Bayer are already lobbying hard to stop the bill, but if we show an overwhelming public support for a ban, we can counter their influence. Sign the petition on the right and tell everyone -- when Avaaz reaches 250,000 signers, they will take their giant inflatable bee to Capitol Hill to tell Congress to save our bees.

I was in West Virginia when 9/11 happened. And yesterday I was in California as Boston's bombing unfolded. I am experiencing the same dismay and sadness. I know 9/11 was on a different scale, but Boston was my home. There is a certain hopelessness about how the victims are never really the ones who are doing the fighting-- The victims always seem to be caught in the crossfire of the extremists fighting whatever fight they think they are fighting-- whether it's religious, political or just in their own minds. Suffering like this is never justified though. But hope resides in how we respond. We cannot be intimidated, we must reach out and help each other and carry on. And that is what i saw in the way Boston reacted. People ran toward the blast to help those who couldn't help themselves. People with homes near the blast opened them up for respite for those who needed it. the first responders, police, fire personnel, hospitals and medical people all worked quickly and professionally. Even those runners from all over the world, kept running to the hospitals to give blood. I am saddened that Boston has become another in a long list of places that have been affected by this senseless violence that has seemed to contaminate our culture. I am at a loss today.
